Cities Less Traveled: A Culinary Trek Through Queens
It’s a well-known fact that you can visit NYC and taste some fantastic culinary delights steps away from any of the well-known attractions. But if you stick around Midtown you risk missing out on some amazing ethnic treats tucked away in the borough of Queens. Just steps away from so many hotels in New York, the 7 train takes you into the heart of Queens in a matter of minutes.
It’s not just about the food either – you can get off at any stop on the train and feel like you are walking into a different world. Food, treats, cultural interests and surprises: a day in Queens is a trip in itself.
From Times Square to Jackson Heights
Your first stop is 74th Street/Roosevelt Avenue, right in the heart of Jackson Heights. As soon as you leave the subway the smell of Indian spices hits you and all you have to do is follow it down the steps to find yourself in the middle of Little India. Amidst the sari shops, jewelry stores, delis and restaurants there is a little gem called the Jackson Diner. Not your typical diner, this special spot offers a hearty Indian buffet lunch every day at an excellent price. Don’t forget to grab a lassi and a box of wonderfully sweet pastries from one of the bakeries before you leave!
A quick walk to Corona
After indulging in Indian food take a brisk walk along Roosevelt Avenue towards Corona where you will be surrounded by Mexican restaurants, stores and amazing little food markets. You can find some excellent treats in the bakeries tucked away in the side streets, and a refreshing Jarritos soda in any of the markets. You cannot visit Corona without indulging in a torta from a truck on a street corner, or stop by Tortilleria Nixtamal for an authentic carnitas taco. All tortillas are made in house here and you can definitely taste the difference.
A few more stops to Flushing
Hop back on the 7 train for a few more stops, jumping off at the end of the line. Be prepared to walk into another world and get your camera ready – Flushing is rapidly becoming one of the largest Chinatowns in the country. Main St is bustling with people, stores and sights to see. You can find yourself a bargain Hello Kitty souvenir in one store, collect some Chinese herbs in another, grab a refreshing bubble tea along the way and then make your way to the New World Mall for some food. Head down to the basement and feast your eyes on the sheer amount of choice that can be found in the food court. Dumplings, hot pot, dim sum, noodles… Anything that can be found in China can most likely be found here. Just jump in and fill a bowl with everything.
Don’t limit yourself to the well-known restaurants and sights in Manhattan as there is so much to discover in Queens. The mix of eclectic foods and cultures is a perfect experience of everyday New York life.
