When you grow up in the Alps you experience a different kind of “normal”. Every time you open your curtains you experience beauty from all angles, and it's something that remains part of you, especially when you move far away to another continent.

That said, there are some amazingly beautiful places to visit on this side of the pond, with Lake Louise and Banff National Park at the top of the list. Located in the middle of the Canadian Rockies in Alberta, you couldn’t ask for more natural beauty every time you open your eyes. There are mountains, lakes, glaciers, wildlife, and an abundance of stars at night. In addition to being surrounded by beauty, there are many things to do all year round.

Transportation and Hotels

The nearest airport is Calgary International Airport, about 195 miles from the lake. It’s best to rent a car from there if you are planning on making the most of all of the available activities. Many area hotels have shuttle buses, but a car is really best for sightseeing purposes, especially for the independent traveler.

There are many hotels in Lake Louise to choose from, but The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is the best located, as it's right on the water and has the most beautiful views. You can book all activities from the hotel, and it even has an ice skating rink right outside its doors in the winter. No matter which hotel you choose, it’s good to book in advance for peak period travel as the best and most scenic rooms fill up very fast.

Winter Attractions

Lake Louise is a fantastic destination for avid winter sports enthusiasts, as there are many slopes available for all levels of skiers and snowboarders. Ski passes are a great deal, as are lessons and rental prices. But you don’t have to be a skier to enjoy the area in winter! Winter hikes, ice skating, hot springs, and mountain helicopter tours are just as much fun. Just breathing in the cool, fresh air from your hotel grounds is relaxing enough.

Summer Visits

Summer means scenic hikes for all ages, and the glacier hikes here are especially unique and interesting. You can hike on foot or on horseback, or you can take to the lake via kayak or canoe. While the lake is quite cold since it's fed by the glacier, there are still areas where the hardy can go for a swim. Those less into the freezing water and more into the spa side of things can just enjoy the different Banff hot springs.

While Lake Louise is chock full of wonderful seasonal activities, there's nothing wrong with going to the area just to relax by the lake, take in the fabulous views, and enjoy the delicious meals served in your hotel. Whether you want to take time off from life or ski down the toughest slopes, the Lake Louise area provides unique discoveries and experiences for every traveler.
